Sexually-Transmitted Diseases

The facts everyone should know

Sexually active people have a four times greater chance of contracting sexually transmitted diseases (STD) than they do of getting pregnant.

Three million teenagers contract STD's annually.

Over 500,000 Britons are infected with the herpes virus.

More than 40% of sexually active singles are infected with human papillomavirus, commonly called genital warts.

One in every 1000 Britons has the HIV virus, which leads to AIDS.

Most teens are afraid of getting pregnant when they have sex. How many are afraid of STD's however? Are you sexually active? Have you ever been tested for syphilis, gonorrhea, herpes, chlamydia, trichinoma, vulvadema, urethritis, hepatitis B, HPV or HIV?

A young girl has a four times greater chance of contracting a sexually-transmitted disease than she does of becoming pregnant.

Venereal Disease Epidemic

Today, within in the next 24 hours, 1000 teenagers will contract a sexually transmitted disease (STD). And that's just teenagers!

Chlamydia Sterilizes

In the 1950s there were only five sexually transmitted diseases known and treated. Today there are more than fifty. Chlamydia is the number one STD amongst teens today. Approximately 200 teenagers a day will contract chlamydia.

This is a bacteria, not a virus. Unlike some venereal diseases, it can be cured.

But more than 80 % of the students who contract this disease do not realize they have it. If you contract chlamydia once in your life, you have a 25 % chance of being sterile for the rest of your life. If you contract it more than once, the chances are even greater that you will never be able to have children
